CNN —In her 2024 Netflix special “Have It All,” stand-up comedian Taylor Tomlinson has a bit about coming out as bisexual. It can sour otherwise happy events, such as Pride Month in June or Bi Visibility Day in September. I attended my first Pride events, ranging from campus events in 2014 to local parades in 2019, as the straight person I was pretending to be. I continued second-guessing myself, so much so that I could hardly enjoy Pride events. It’s the piece I was missing at my early Pride events, when I was too busy quantifying my behavior and assuming I came up short.

What was supposed to be a yearlong $140,000 renovation ballooned into three excruciating years that cost us more than $500,000 — and the work is still not finished. But as my husband and I soon discovered, unless you've made a plan, legal protections for homeowners are close to nonexistent. Every time our contractor turned up the temperature, we grimly adjusted to the reality of our demise. Knowing the cardinal rule of home renovation — never pay in full until the job is over and inspected — we grew suspicious. Despite completing several home-improvement and renovation projects with her husband over the years, she lacked the confidence to DIY the renovation of her newly purchased 6,500-square-foot home.

Marine insurance companies will be on the hook for much of the costs. These insurance companies are backed by insurance companies of their own – a type of business known as a reinsurer. The potential cost of insurance claims from the bridge collapse could be between $1 billion and $3 billion, analysts at Barclays wrote in a note Wednesday. “But other than that, the economic impact of what has happened will be enormous, but not recoverable from the ship,” Davies said. Maryland lawmakers, meanwhile, are drafting an emergency bill to provide income replacement for Port of Baltimore workers impacted by the bridge collapse.

You get tax forms such as W-2s and 1099s from employers and financial institutions each year. "It's the [IRS] matching software that's the biggest, most consistent problem for taxpayers," said Bill Smith, national director of tax technical services at financial services firm CBIZ MHM. Since the IRS already has a copy of your tax forms, its software can easily flag missing forms, Smith explained. When to expect tax formsWhile many tax forms must be sent by Jan. 31, others won't arrive until mid-February or beyond. While most taxpayers will receive forms from their employers or financial institutions, some may not, especially for small amounts.

But there's a catch with conventional assets: the wash sale rule . Now, tax professionals are flagging a potential wrinkle that may arise: Even though bitcoin itself isn't subject to the wash sale rule, a spot bitcoin ETF very well may be. Property versus security Under federal tax law, the IRS deems cryptocurrency to be property . Managing limitations At its core, that means investors should avoid swapping in and out of the same spot bitcoin ETF within the 61-day limit if they had sold the position. This also raises the question of whether dumping one spot bitcoin ETF for another would be deemed substantially identical.

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Two former senior U.S. officials will arrive in Taiwan on Sunday for post-election talks and underscore the U.S. government's "longstanding interest" in peace across the Taiwan Strait, the de facto U.S. embassy in Taipei said. In a show of support for the government, a senior administration official said last week that President Joe Biden planned to send an unofficial delegation to the Chinese-claimed island. "As we have done previously following a Taiwan presidential election, the U.S. government has asked former senior officials to travel in their private capacity to Taiwan," AIT said, adding its U.S.-based Chair Laura Rosenberger would be accompanying. China has stepped up its military and political pressure against Taiwan over the past four years. Both have offered talks with China but been rebuffed.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan on Sunday condemned what it said were “fallacious comments” by China following the self-governing island's presidential and parliamentary election the previous day. The verbal sparring did not bode well for the future of Taiwan's relations with China under the winner, President-elect Lai Ching-te, or for China's relations with the United States. The institute is the de-facto U.S. Embassy, since the United States does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. China regards Taiwan as a renegade province and says that it should not even have a foreign ministry or any official relations with foreign governments. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said in its statement that "the Taiwan question is China’s internal affair.

When Kimberly Dowdell becomes president of the American Institute of Architects next month, her ascent will be noteworthy. Ms. Dowdell, an architect in a profession that is overwhelmingly white and male, is a Black woman, the first to fill the post in the group’s 166-year history. African Americans make up 13.6 percent of the U.S. population, but only 1.8 percent of licensed architects in the country are Black, according to the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. Fewer than a quarter of the nearly 120,000 licensed architects in the United States are women, and not even one half of 1 percent of architects are Black women. There are small signs of change: Nearly 3 percent of architects who received their license last year were Black, and 43 percent of new architects were women.

Video calls are broadly considered proxies for face-to-face meetings and therefore are currently subject to little or no formal record-keeping obligations. At least two major global banks are now recording Zoom calls, said sources with knowledge of the matter, who declined to be named because the information is not public. One bank is recording Zoom calls undertaken by certain staff, including traders, while the other is recording all Zoom calls so content can be reviewed later if needed. FINRA declined to comment on how many firms were subject to the rule or whether the rule also extended to video calls. Video calls pose "unique risks" and technology needed to efficiently screen video calls is not widely used, said Matt Smith, CEO of communications surveillance firm SteelEye.
